The Future School Leaders Academy's Mission

The mission of the Future School Leaders Academy is to provide a powerful and
effective learning experience for all candidates. The goal of its leadership preparation is
to ignite transformative, socially responsible and ethical leaders who can create, model,
and sustain vital, dynamic, democratic, and caring school communities where everyone
is an achiever.

The Future School Leaders Academy's Purpose

The Future School Leaders Academy (FSLA) aims to increase the quality, diversity, and
size of the pool of candidates for leadership careers in the public schools and districts of
Putnam and Westchester counties. FSLA gives admissions priority to promising
educators who are instructionally effective or otherwise effective in supporting student
learning and show a capacity for ethical, responsible leadership. It encourages the
participation of districts with large minority populations in order to cultivate leadership
from within their schools.

FSLA provides dual certification in building and district educational leadership and is
collaboratively sponsored by Bank Street College, Putnam and Northern Westchester
BOCES (PNWBOCES), and local school districts. The program's quality is rooted in its
collaborative, hands-on approach to leadership preparation through the shared roles of
its sponsors in the development of each candidate and of the program as a whole.
Figure 1 reflects the multiple and inter-connected program layers and components of
the program.

The program addresses the leadership priorities of the region's unique district
conditions which include: high community expectations and parental involvement,
diverse student needs, diverse values and expectations about quality schooling, and
broad leadership expectations and responsibilities. Participating districts require leaders
who have the courage and capacity to balance competing expectations and demands
as they encourage social and civic responsibilities among students, staff and the
schools.
