Job Title:Applied Research Engineer 3Department:Engineering | Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Ohio State is looking for an applied research engineer with experience in design, epitaxial growth, and material characterization of III-V semiconductors using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The Research Engineer position is crucial for driving forward the department's research program in semiconductor materials and devices. The successful candidate will contribute significantly to the academic and research excellence of the Department.

The primary focus will be on semiconductor materials and devices, and most work will be project-oriented with funded research programs defining projects. The Research Engineer will lead and independently complete work in the design, growth, and characterization of semiconductor materials. Connected to this work, the Research Engineer will effectively communicate their results to internal and external audiences; train graduate and undergraduate students; support proposals and project planning; engage with faculty, research collaborators, sponsors, and vendors.

This is a critical hire to support a new project that is funded by the Department of Defense Micro-Electronics Commons.

The position will be funded on a combination of sponsored program awards and testing/serviced projects.

Additional Information:

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Ohio State is looking for an applied research engineer with experience in design, epitaxial growth, and material characterization of III-V semiconductors using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The Research Engineer will lead and independently complete work in the design, growth, and characterization of semiconductor materials. Connected to this work, the Research Engineer will effectively maintain MBE systems; establish processes to oversee an "open access" growth facility; communicate their results to internal and external audiences; train graduate and undergraduate students; support proposals and project planning; engage with faculty, research collaborators, sponsors, and vendors. The combination of research expertise, technology know-how, effective management, and broad collaboration makes this role integral to maintaining the department's reputation for cutting-edge research.

The research engineer will be working closely with the research members in the Krishna Infrared Detector Lab (KIND lab, www.kind.engineering.osu.edu). Through research in infrared detection and imaging, the KIND lab trains and educates engineers, advances the frontiers of science, and develops next generation technologies.

Responsibilities:

Design, grow, and characterize (structural, optical, and electrical) high quality III-V semiconductor heterostructures.

Manage all day-to-day operations of MBE growth and support equipment including vacuum systems, electronics, cryogenics, mechanical, and optical subsystem assemblies.

Troubleshoot and resolve epitaxial growth quality using system diagnostics and material characterization results.

Plan and perform periodic maintenance for MBE and support systems.

Undertake root cause analysis of system and equipment problems.

Stay abreast of the latest developments in the field and incorporate innovative approaches into task execution and research proposals.

Develop and implement effective management of the MBE growth system that is shared as an open access resource.

Establish a detailed process for equipment access and efficiently engage with multiple users.

Understand and manage the finances of the system and facility.

Actively contribute to the proposal, planning, and managing of research projects.

Manage tasks efficiently; ensuring timelines and milestones are met.

Train and mentor graduate/undergraduate students fostering their development in research and development of research proposals and collaborations.

Develop a workforce development strategy for the laboratory.

Participate in strategic planning processes to identify opportunities for new technologies that can improve the lab's existing research and development focus.

Be a team player by engaging in open communication to facilitate knowledge sharing and present research findings to the team in a clear and concise manner.

Prepare and contribute to reports, presentations, and papers for professional audiences.

Required Education:

Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Material Science and Engineering or related fields.

Desired Education

PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Material Science and Engineering or related fields.

Required Experience:

  • 4 years of prior experience in MBE growth and research and development of semiconductor devices
  • Technical training in structural, optical, and electrical characterization of semiconductor materials and devices
  • Familiarity with design of semiconductor heterostructures using semiconductor device simulation tools and software
  • Strong background in semiconductor physics including heterostructure engineering
  • Hands on engineering orientation and a problem solver
  • Instructional and training experience for all operational and maintenance phases of MBE systems
    • Preparation, growth, characterization, and analysis
    • Offline and online maintenance and calibration of MBE equipment including vacuum lines, chamber, and any subsystems

Desired Experience

4-8 Years of Research and Development Experience

  • A broad range of knowledge and skills, which include:
    • In-depth knowledge of MBE systems
    • Semiconductor physics and band diagrams; Keen strategic thinking and planning
    • Effective problem-solving skills including root cause analysis
