Our unit is the Center for Inclusive Excellence (CIE) where our work is cultivating and sustaining a framework of inclusive excellence with our community partners and across the school of medicine by actively engaging with students, trainees, faculty, and staff to co-produce an equitable, anti-racist, inclusive and diverse learning and working environment.

The vision of the CIE is to serve as an educational, informational, and strategic hub that will shepherd the IU School of Medicine community to a state where the principles of inclusive excellence are honored in and central to all that we do.

We serve 1,436 medical students, 1,340 medical residents and fellows, 641 students in the graduate division programs, over 3,000 full time faculty and over 2,000 staff. The CIE serves learners of all types, faculty and staff and is focused on advancing education, clinical care, and research through a DEIJ lens.

Job Summary

The Assistant Director serves as the administrative leader for the IU School of Medicine's (IUSM) pathway programs. Working within the Center for Inclusive Excellence (CIE) team, the assistant director of pathway programs provides leadership and oversight for creating and maintaining effective educational programs and student support services for the pathway programs across the 9-campus system, higher education institutions, high schools, and middle schools.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with IUSM Graduate Medical Education, Medical Student Education, Graduate Division and Admissions Office units in alignment with IUSM Strategic Framework for Inclusive Excellence to develop new and/or enhance existing pathway programs from K-12, pre-med, graduate programs, residency, fellowship, and ultimately faculty roles. Additional collaborations required include IU affiliated programs and the greater Indiana community.
  • Oversees and directs pathway programs across the nine-campus system.
  • Responsible for understanding what programs currently exist (e.g., Dr. Camp, Camp MD, etc.,) and what gaps remain
  • Establishes and maintains liaisons with universities, school districts, public and private local organizations, state agencies and other potential partners.
  • Evaluates data sources and tracking tools in collaboration with the CIE's Assistant Director of Research and Planning, CIE team and other relevant stakeholders at the school and university level.
  • Ensures students enrolled in the school's pathway programs have sufficient mentoring opportunities, professional development and academic readiness to matriculate into IUSM.
  • Strategizes ways to connect pathway programs for a continuum within IU or the state of Indiana.
  • Coordinates and attends various recruitment fairs on behalf of the School and/or unit.
  • Helps identify and collaborate with relevant stakeholders for developmental opportunities for learners in preparation for a pathway continuum.
  • Develops and builds long-lasting and strategic connections with the community to increase the presence of IUSM in topical community pathway programs.
  • Regularly evaluates the processes that connect pathway programs and streamline the process to increase synergy with departmentally lead initiatives.
  • Participates in school-wide and campus-wide committees.
  • Oversees the marketing and recruitment activities affiliated with pathway programs.
  • Manages and approves the content for the Pathway programs' website and intranet.
  • Learns and understands campus protocols for minors on campus ensuring compliance with existing policies and procedures for programs and activities.
  • Maintains and advises on programmatic budget; may seek additional funding opportunities via grants and other similar funding sources;
  • Responsible for the mentoring, professional development, and academic readiness of those engaged in IUSM pathway programs; designed to improve recruitment and retention of students and trainees whose backgrounds and/or perspectives will contribute to IUSM's inclusive excellence and health equity goals.
  • Supervises student workers and coordinates volunteers for summer camp support and additional pathway program initiatives.
General Responsibilities
  • Plans, directs and implements programs or events, including the creation of materials to support these events.
  • Provides staff communications and serves as liaison to program participants, collaborators in other units, community partners, vendors and the public; approves staff purchase requests; arranges staff travel, accommodations, and research activities.
  • Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on a variety of issues such as budget management software and advanced strategies for timely spending of grant funds. May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
  • Recruits, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates faculty and staff partners, students and volunteers. Mentors, serves as a resource and provides guidance to team staff members as needed.
  • Researches available grants and works closely with managers to identify funding needs and potential sources, creates grant proposals that further advance support of the program and program participants; May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
  • Constructs and administers program budgets and approves spending. Tracks progress on deliverables, analyzes data on projected spending and prepares reports for higher management and funding sources.
  • Keepa abreast of best practices to recommend policies and procedures that deliver a quality program experience.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree
Preferred
  • Master's degree in higher education or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in related field
Preferred
  • Experience with applicant management systems (e.g. VSLO, AMP: Student Admissions Software, etc.,)
  • 5 years progressive experience in health professions education or higher education
  • Experience with pathway program development and administration and/or student affairs
  • Experience with collaborating amongst various stakeholder groups

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

$63,000 - $68,000 per year based on candidate experience, skills, and qualifications.

Work Location

Indianapolis, Indiana

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
