Description

The University of Chicago Department of Mathematics invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor. Appointments at this rank are for a term of up to three years with the possibility of renewal. This non-tenure-track position has the potential for a progressive career trajectory with competitive salary and benefits. The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the University. The expected start date is September 1, 2024.

Position responsibilities typically include teaching six one-quarter courses per year, sustaining a professional development program that supports the educational mission of the Department, and contributing to the University's teaching mission through non-classroom instructional and/or service duties.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a PhD in Mathematics or a closely related field by the start date
Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of effective teaching in a range of undergraduate mathematics courses, including single-variable calculus, multi-variable calculus, and linear algebra

  • Syllabi of courses previously taught and/or designed by the candidate or sample syllabi of proposed courses;
  • A teaching statement, including a summary of teaching activities, a detailed explanation of teaching philosophy and goals, and a list of courses previously taught, if applicable;
  • Three letters of recommendation, at least two of which must address teaching ability.

  • Applicants may submit additional evidence of pedagogical accomplishment and promise such as a teaching portfolio, recent course evaluations, third-party observations of the applicant's teaching if available, or other relevant assessments.
