The Opportunity:

The Department of Anthropology at Washington State University invites applications for a permanent, full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Pullman, WA with a specialty in evolutionary/biological anthropology. The successful candidate must be able to oversee our undergraduate major in Human Biology, and to offer undergraduate anthropology courses towards the Human Biology major. We seek applicants who have active research programs with a focus on living people, and who can make a strong contribution to graduate education in biological, medical, evolutionary, or cultural evolutionary anthropology. The successful candidate will show clear articulation with one or more areas represented in our Cultural and Evolutionary Anthropology program including, but not limited to: behavioral ecology; environmental anthropology; ethnobiology; evolutionary medicine; evolutionary psychology; human development; livelihoods, craft, and global change; and/or medical anthropology.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on August 16, 2025.

Our new colleague will be expected to teach in face-to-face or online programs, meaningfully contribute to enhancing the research reputation of the department, take an active role working with graduate students, and make service contributions to the department, college, university, and profession, commensurate with rank. This is a 9-month academic appointment teaching twelve to fourteen (12-14) credit hours per year (typically two three- or four-credit courses in each of the fall and spring semesters). The workload for this position is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service.


Required Qualifications for All Candidates:

  • Earned doctorate in anthropology or an appropriate, related discipline by the beginning of the appointment.

  • An active research program in biological, medical, evolutionary, or cultural evolutionary anthropology that focuses on living people.

  • Ability to oversee the Human Biology major, which is jointly directed by the Department of Anthropology and the School of Biological Sciences.

  • Ability to teach Introduction to Biological Anthropology (Anth 260), and to offer courses toward the Human Biology and Anthropology majors.

  • Demonstrated record of or potential to achieve a record of research accomplishment.

  • Demonstrated record of or potential to establish and maintain an externally funded research program.

  • Demonstrated record of or potential to successfully teach and mentor students at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

  • Demonstrated record of or potential for commitment to equitable and inclusive educational experiences as in alignment with WSU's land grant mission.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
