Our high-achieving student body represents diverse experiences from first-generation college-goers to international students. Beyond their talent, these classmates share a desire to shape the future through technology, insight, intellectual exploration, and community service.

Job Description:

The Cinema Department at Binghamton University seeks an established or emerging artist, working and exhibiting in experimental modes of production, for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in our production stream at the rank of assistant professor. This position carries a 2/2 teaching load. The successful candidate will maintain an active creative practice and will also contribute to the department via service and mentoring, including committee work, independent studies, thesis advising, curricular development, etc. We started an MFA in Cinema Program in Fall 2023, and the successful applicant will work together with the faculty, staff, and students to shape this new program.

The Cinema Department develops artists and creative thinkers who are willing to explore experimental modalities of practice. A strong history of underground and independent production has made our trailblazing department an antidote to the Hollywood industry model.

We are committed to offering an enriching educational environment that is inclusive of all of its constituents and that fosters a diverse, multi-vocal, connected community. We recognize that the field of cinema does not reflect the diversity of the population that it serves. We invite applications from colleagues who share in our commitment to a more inclusive discipline, through cinematic practice, research, and teaching.

This position is part of Binghamton's multiyear cluster hire initiative in Arts Practice, Performance and Research in the 21st Century: https://www.binghamton.edu/harpur/faculty/cluster-hire.html

Requirements:

  • An MFA in film production.
  • A strong record as an artist.
  • Teaching experience at the college level is required.

We seek applicants with a strong commitment to fostering a student culture in which video or filmmaking as a creative practice will flourish. We value effective teaching and technical proficiency. We encourage the exploration of alternative processes involving installation, performance, animation, and new media, and we value global and cross-cultural perspectives.
