The Department of Education at Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Secondary Education in the area of English Language Arts to begin August 2025. The successful candidate should be a culturally proficient educator who is dynamic, team-oriented, and possesses a passion for teaching, facilitating student learning, and collaboration within the department and the university at-large. This is a full-time, 9-month position with teaching responsibilities in the undergraduate program.

Responsibilities

    Teach undergraduate courses in both the Education and English Department; including human development and learning, secondary assessment, secondary education methods, young adult literature, reading and writing in 7-12, english language arts methods 7-12.Supervise student practicum experiences associated with methods courses.Supervise student teachers Advise undergraduate studets Collaborate with department colleagues to implement department programs and initiatives in service of students and in support of the NWU strategic priorities;Serve on department, university, and statewide committees as necessary in support of department goals;Engage in scholarship and professional development;Demonstrate proficiency in and support students with the implementation of relevant technology applications in support of instruction;Encourage responsibility and creativity in the student teaching experience.





Qualifications

  • PhD or Ed.D. focusing on the field of education is required. Exceptional ABD candidates with a dissertation defense date may be considered;
  • Evidence of at least three years of successful teaching experience in English or Language Arts or related field at the 6-12 level within the United States is required;
  • An understanding of culturally proficient processes and practices is essential;
  • Ability and flexibility to accept instructional assignments that may include days and evenings, as well as a valid driver's license and access to transportation are required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with successful experience teaching or the ability to develop and offer courses in one or more of the following areas: Social Sciences, Humanities, Human/Child Development, Educational Equity and Social Change;
  • Familiarity with Canvas course technology or similar LMS software is a plus;
  • Other desirable qualities include:
    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication, and problem-solving skills, along with ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
    • Work ethic that promotes teamwork, enhances creativity and motivation, and builds consensus in a high-energy and high-task environment;
    • Strong commitment to student-centered active learning and student engagement activities;
    • Demonstrated engagement in scholarly and/ or professional development activities including appropriate research, presentations, and publications;
    • Ability to maintain academic qualifications and to meet the NDE requirements for teaching in the undergraduate program.
    • Qualification to supervise student teachers and practicum students for a range of grade levels
    • Demonstrated record of academic excellence with professional and personal integrity.
    • Knowledge of higher education and 6-12 education goals and state standards.
    • Experience instructing and supporting English Language Learners;
    • Experience instructing and supporting students with disabilities and exceptionalities.

Final rank upon hire will be determined by the Provost commensurate with experience and education.
