The Meharry Medical College School of Medicine is seeking individuals to fill an educator-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level in Physiology. In particular, we seek an individual that is focused on the physiological functions and process of living organisms and their parts. The Department of Professional & Medical Education and the School of Medicine recognizes outstanding teaching and innovative medical education scholarship as the bases for advancement.
We are seeking innovative educators with energy and commitment to medical student education. The successful candidates must be interested in curriculum development and integration with the clinical sciences, working collaboratively with like-minded and talented individuals at Meharry Medical College. The School of Medicine is committed to active learning, clinical relevance, and measurement of educational outcomes.
Candidates will be responsible for developing and delivering teaching material on organ segment based needed for the practice of clinical medicine. The Physiology teaching occurs during the pre-clerkship years but the individual is anticipated to be actively involved in clinical and/or basic teaching that may occur at other points in students' education. The selected individuals will also have administrative responsibilities including coordination with other courses, generation of appropriate evaluation tools, and cross campus collaborations.
The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of clinicians and scholars to teach, and to develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate scholarship in medical education. Scholarly activities may include the advancement of new theories and principles and the improvement and application of knowledge, especially in new settings (e.g. online). In addition, outstanding service to the Department, the School and the College is expected. Individuals with three or more years teaching experience or research experience in the sciences, preferably in a medical school curriculum, are especially encouraged to apply.

Daily Operations

  • Provide instruction in clinical or basic sciences with instructional delivery of basic principles when needed for the practice of clinical medicine. Instruction will be provided in a variety of settings, to include: lecture halls, clinical sites and simulation. Instruction may also be computer-based and/or in the form of distance education efforts.
  • Generate curricular materials for instructional activities. Practical consideration will be given to applicants experienced in innovative teaching methodologies that incorporate active and student-directed learning (e.g. TBL, flipped classrooms or case-based instruction). Coordinate and integrate instructional activities and curricular materials with other faculty in order to enhance the learning experience for students.
  • Establish learning objectives and competency standards for undergraduate medical students.
  • Contribute to the process of student assessment, and the development, implementation and evaluation of assessment materials and procedures.
  • Develop and implement effective remediation experiences for students performing below established competency standards.
  • Use and promote best practices in education. Provide mentoring, training and support for peers in order to improve instruction across the curriculum and encourage the adoption of improved instructional techniques by the faculty.
  • Maintain and improve competence in areas of teaching and scholarship through self-directed efforts and participation in faculty development opportunities.
  • Advise, and mentor medical students regarding academic and curricular matters.
  • Collaborative scholarly work is encouraged and although not required, extramural support is valued.
  • Administrative/Scholarly Activity includes but is not limited to: Perform administrative duties, such as committee service, course directorships and/or college service.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills
  • Active participation in local, regional, national, or international professional organizations related to the individual's discipline
  • Previous administrative responsibility within a medical school department or a program of medical education
  • Expertise and experience in medical student academic supervision and assessment
  • Experience with teaching subjects related to scientific methods, the philosophy of science, clinician-scientist collaboration, and the role of the scientist in medicine and society
  • Demonstrated extramural interests outside of bio-medicine or medical education
  • Active involvement in community affairs
  • Scholarly work within the area of the individual's discipline demonstrated by publication, presentation, or recognition as an authority.
  • Established track record of mentoring
  • Ability to demonstrate a potential for scholarly and creative activity that would merit appointment and potential for promotion in an education-based foundational science department.

Required Education and Experience
  • PhD in Physiology or related field or MD with clinical experience and teaching expertise in the field.
  • Ability to present unequivocal evidence of excellent and effective teaching.
  • Candidates must demonstrate experience with, or a commitment to, diversity and inclusion
