The Biostatistician I will collect, examine, interpret, and apply analysis to data sets, focusing on discovery and prediction. Responsibilities include extracting and processing information to find patterns and trends, using technology to analyze data, and creating algorithms and related predictive models with the goal of deployment. Work opportunities will consist of both groundbreaking innovation projects and analysis on studies as needed for Shepherd Center.

The Biostatistician will coordinate efforts directly with the Statistician(s) II, Statistician(s) III, Shepherd Center Research Directors, and the VP of Research & Innovation or a designee. The Biostatistician may act in a liaison capacity with other analytical programs and external organizations with the support of the Statistician II and/or Statistician III.

Job Responsibilities

  • Uses various analytic techniques to manipulate structured and unstructured data sets to generate insights to inform scientific and health organizational decisions.
  • Extracts, cleans, and transforms data from multiple sources in preparation for exploratory data analysis, modeling, and reporting.
  • Transforms model outputs into digestible formats for the end users through visualization, clear tables, and thoughtful presentations. Assists technical and nontechnical end users in leveraging and interpreting the analysis.
  • Builds, validates, and applies well-grounded predictive models in production using state-of-the-art techniques and tools.
  • Educate others on analysis and statistical methods. Able to clearly articulate key differences between statistical approaches based on study needs and data structure.
  • Facilitates and participates in cross-functional teams.
  • Is responsible for components of larger analytical projects.
  • Investigates opportunities for the application of analysis. Helps pursue funding, both internal and external, for data science projects. Prepares budgets and project plans. Manages project expenses.
  • Works to further their education and analytical skills, such as acquiring knowledge of non-parametric analytics or new specialized statistical approaches and software packages.
  • Submits at least one poster presentation, conference talk, or manuscript to refereed journals per year as first or second author.
  • Invests in learning Rehabilitation Science.
  • Participates in all required continuing education training.
  • Is diligent and dedicated to computer security and healthcare privacy requirements and best practices. Stays abreast of relevant techniques for protecting sensitive data and implements them when appropriate.
  • Practices proper safety techniques following Center and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for reporting employee/patient/visitor injuries, accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and the occurrence notification system.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to the area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within the scope of responsibility and supports the problem-resolution process.
Required Minimum Education
  • Education: Bachelors with a concentration in a quantitative discipline such as social science (e.g., sociology), public health, or statistics AND has 4+ years of experience in analytical activities.
  • OR: Possesses a Master's degree with a concentration in a quantitative discipline such as social science (e.g., sociology), public health, or statistics.
Required Minimum Certification
  • No professional certifications are required .
Required Minimum Experience
  • Has demonstrated statistical analysis and related modeling skills and the ability to create compelling visualizations.
  • Is familiar with parametric and non-parametric statistical analysis. Can carry out the process for building and validating such models.
  • Experience building data sets from multiple data sources.
Required Minimum Skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse clinical, research, and other stakeholder community.
  • Completes mandatory education and annual competency assessment requirements by the determined due date.
  • Proficient in communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Self-starter, attention to detail, and results orientated, able to work under minimal guidance.
  • Ability to educate others in statistical areas of expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Survey research and methodology training.
  • Exposure to healthcare data.
  • Working knowledge of SPSS.
  • Exposure to coding.
  • Knowledge of human subject experimentation and experimental design.
Physical Demands
  • No or minimal physical effort is required.
Working Conditions
  • Remote work is acceptable initially, but the candidate is expected to relocate to Atlanta and work on-site.
  • The candidate will be encouraged and receive support for continued graduate education.
  • No potential for exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Work is typically performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
