University of Iowa Campus Safety is seeking a Dispatcher I. Under general supervision, the person in this role provides communications and coordination of a public safety nature for university Campus Safety, other departments, and also for surrounding public safety agencies by utilizing multi-frequency radio, computer networks, telephone, and personal contact. This position is responsible for monitoring university emergency phones and various alarm systems.

This position is performed fully on campus.

Duties to Include:

  • Operates a multi frequency radio system per FCC requirements, ability to multi-task and possess the ability to document, recall and relay information accurately.
  • Assigns duty personnel to requests for assistance/service in conjunction with shift commander. Maintain location and status of personnel, as applicable.
  • Operates a multi-line telephone system for emergency and business operations. Operate NCIC/IOWA Systems.
  • Monitors, updates, and relays information regarding fire and burglar alarms from systems located in the emergency communications center.
Department pays for all applicable training and certification costs. Employees are compensated for time attending required trainings.

Schedule: 12-hour shifts, either 6:00am to 6:00pm (Day shift), or 6:00pm to 6:00am (Night shift); rotating work weeks

About University of Iowa Emergency Communications Center:

The University of Iowa Emergency Communications Center (ECC), a unit within Campus Safety, is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Often the first contact one has with any unit of Campus Safety is a Dispatcher whose mission is to listen effectively and provide the appropriate resources to those in need.

Dispatchers in the Emergency Communications Center serve as a vital link between emergency services and the university community. In this role, they are responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency telephone lines, using public safety radiocommunications, and utilizing the IOWA System (Iowa On-line Warrants & Articles) and National Crime Information Center database. Among other tasks, Dispatchers also monitor various alarm systems and ensure appropriate resources and personnel are dispatched. Upon applicable authorization, dispatchers activate emergency notifications systems across campus, including Hawk Alert.

All Dispatchers undergo training to stay up to date of current technology and emergency communications techniques. This includes on-the-job basic training for new Dispatchers, as well as the required successful completion of the 2-hour IOWA/NCIC Certification Course, 40-hour Basic Telecommunications Training Course and 24-hour Emergency Medical Dispatcher Course within the designated timeframe. Dispatchers also take part in periodic in-house updates on departmental policies and effective emergency communications procedures. ECC personnel may also participate in advanced training in a variety of areas, including handling domestic violence calls, suicide intervention, and Crisis Intervention Team training.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
  • Any combination of clerical education or experience and/or college or university level course work which is equivalent to two years of full-time employment.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks.
  • Public contact/customer service experience.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Ability to actively listen and communicate effectively through clear speech, hearing, and written documentation.
