Position Summary:

The Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina is a nationally recognized leader in surgical excellence, education, and research. With 486 dedicated members, including 91 trainees, 44 advanced practice providers (APPs), 97 faculty, 111 staff, and 143 adjunct faculty, the department is committed to delivering outstanding care across a wide spectrum of surgical disciplines. The department recently celebrated the opening of a state-of-the-art surgical hospital and a new CVTICU, further enhancing its commitment to providing the highest quality of care.

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, one of nine clinical divisions within the department, is at the forefront of advancing surgical care for adult cardiac, congenital cardiac, and thoracic conditions. The division comprises 10 faculty members, 8 APPs, and 6 integrated residents who work collaboratively to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care. The Section of Adult Cardiac Surgery is particularly distinguished for its expertise in treating a wide variety of cardiac conditions, including complex valve disease, aortic surgery, cardiac transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. Faculty in the division are deeply engaged in both innovative clinical programs and the training of future leaders in cardiothoracic surgery.

The Department is seeking applications for a board eligible/board certified full-time academic cardiac surgeon to join our Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. This position is being recruited as an open-rank, open-track appointment at an FTE between 0.5 FTE and 1.0 FTE. The appointment may also be offered as a fixed-term track or tenure/tenure track appointment. Academic appointment will be commensurate with the candidate's experience. The faculty member will be expected to perform clinical and research duties, along with the academic responsibilities of an educational institution.

Responsibilities will include surgical management of heart failure, cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, aortic and coronary artery surgery, surgical and transcatheter management of valvular disease. Other responsibilities will include teaching residents and students and conducting research commensurate with their academic rank. Candidates will be expected to have demonstrated a commitment to the educational mission and an attitude of teamwork and collaboration across a multidisciplinary team.

Applicants with complementary skills to existing faculty such as academic experience in clinical outcomes, quality and safety, health services, education, ethics, or informatics or clinical expertise in heart failure, transplant, or minimally invasive approaches are strongly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

MD, Board Certified or Board Eligible Cardiac Surgeon. Previous experience as an academic surgeon is required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The successful candidate will be team-oriented and have the ability to interact well with colleagues inside and out of the Division.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
