Position Summary:

The Department of Political Science at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for the position of Chair of the department to begin Summer 2025. The appointment will be at the rank of full Professor, tenured in the Department and based on the Boca Raton campus. The search is open with regards to subfield specialization. We seek a dynamic scholar and visionary leader with a track record of administrative success. The review of applications will begin on November 15, 2024.

The Department of Political Science has 17 faculty members committed to excellence in research and teaching. The department has over 450 undergraduate majors and 25 Master's students. The department also contributes to the College of Arts & Letters' interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Comparative Studies. Programs in the department or led by department faculty include the Advanced Campaigning Program, the FAU Florida Internship Program and the Leon Charney Diplomacy Program and the Political Communication and Public Opinion Research (PolCom) Lab. FAU is a multi-campus doctoral research university (RU/High Research Activity) with approximately 30,000 students. Also, FAU is on the cusp of being designated as R1.

Summary of Responsibilities:

The department Chair provides academic and administrative leadership within the department and is responsible for the following:

  • Personnel Management: Overseeing department faculty and managing staff, including training and performance reviews. Monitoring teaching and service loads to ensure balance among faculty.

  • Curriculum and Scheduling: Ensuring curriculum alignment with academic standards and current trends. Managing course scheduling to optimize student learning experiences.

  • Budget and Resource Management: Managing the department's budget, allocating resources effectively and ensuring fiscal responsibility. Overseeing department facilities to maintain a safe learning and research environment.

  • Recruitment and Retention: Leading efforts to recruit talented faculty by fostering an inclusive environment for working and learning. Creating and implementing strategies for enhancing the undergraduate major.

  • Balanced Advocacy: Overseeing the balance between advocating for the specific needs of the department and the broader interests of the college and university.

  • Community Outreach: Working collaboratively with the department's Advisory Board and supporting department and faculty efforts to foster relationships within the community.

  • Teaching and Research: Teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in line with area of expertise (1:1 teaching load). Mentoring students and maintaining an active research agenda.
Minimum Qualifications:*A Ph.D. in Political Science or a related field.

*Evidence of excellence in research and teaching appropriate for appointment as a tenured full Professor in the department.

*A successful history of administrative leadership and service.

*Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students consistent with the expectations and mission of a research university.

Transcripts:
The selected candidate for this position is required to submit an official transcript sent directly from the institution for the Provost's credential file prior to the first day of employment. Similarly, for degrees from outside the United States, the evaluation by an organization belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES), with an indication of the documents the evaluation was prepared from (official transcripts, diplomas, dissertation abstracts) is required for the Provost's credential file prior to the first day of employment. Transcripts must be issued to Florida Atlantic University, not to the individual applicant.

Background Screening:
Selected candidates must successfully complete and pass all employment screenings prior to the start of employment. Employment screenings may include a criminal background check (level I and level II), motor vehicle check, credit check, reference checks, alcohol, and drug screening check.
