Job Description/Summary

The Department Chair will be responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair will promote excellence in department programs within the College and will act as an advocate for the mission of the department to the administration and outside constituencies. The Department Chair provides leadership and mentoring of faculty, is engaged in short- and long-term planning, and is committed to providing direction toward the achievement of the highest possible level of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service activities of the department. The Department Chair will collaborate with colleagues in the School of Health Professions to foster a culture of civility and inclusion rooted in the College's Catholic Benedictine identity and values and informed by the College's goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have a RN license in the State of Minnesota, or the ability to obtain licensure in the State of Minnesota
  • Must have a terminal degree in nursing or a related field or be in the process of obtaining
  • Prior teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across the spectrum of diversity (i.e. gender, race, sexual orientation, religious and political belief, abilities, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and human relationship skills Administrative experience or evidence of leadership quality
  • Management and budget experience at the collegiate level

Key Responsibilities

  • Departmental Leadership
  • Establish an atmosphere of trust within the department.
  • Serve as a department expert and primary contact for the department.
  • Inspire and challenge all members to excel within the discipline and foster collaboration and collegiality among all departmental members.
  • Oversight of department evaluation and data collection
  • Support and facilitate the long range goals of the department in alignment with the department and school's mission and vision and the College's strategic plan.
  • Manage a. Faculty resource needs b. Equipment resource needs c. Faculty loads and assignments d. Course schedule development.
  • Conduct monthly department meetings.
  • Manage conflict among departmental faculty/staff members. Provide updates of conflict(s) to the dean.
  • Collaborate, delegate, and coordinate department recruitment events with identified stakeholders (admissions, clinical partners, program directors, etc.)
  • Identify and lead grant applications to support the department.
  • Manage the department's record-keeping system, including required accreditation reports and related documents, when applicable.
  • Understand standards and requirements of specialty or profession-specific accreditors, and lead departmental planning and compliance.

  • Work with program directors to prepare and manage department and program budgets.
  • Oversight of course schedule.
  • Work with program directors to assign and ensure faculty load is met.
  • Manage department updates to the course catalog.
  • Lead the maintenance and development of the department, including regular assessment activities (DON Master Assessment Plan), program reviews, and accreditation activities, when applicable.
  • Initiate requests for facilities, equipment, supplies, and the administrative support required for effective teaching.
  • Prepare departmental annual reports.
  • Hire and supervise academic support staff and ensure they serve the instructional and administrative needs of the department.
  • Collaborate with administrative offices to support student and faculty processes - transfer equivalencies, registration, course offerings, course overrides, academic advisement processes, student processes, etc.
  • Ensure that work with stakeholders is accounted for through effective data collection methods - part of DON Master Assessment Plan
  • Ensure that college and accrediting body protocols are followed - DON Master Assessment Plan
  • Ensure that data collection tools have valid and accountability measures are followed and in place- DON Master Assessment Plan

Curriculum

  • Intellectual Property Agreements
  • Initiate the development of new programs and oversee continued improvement of established curricula.
  • Promote cross disciplinary activities throughout the department
  • Oversee development and implementation of program assessment plans, supervise collection and analysis of data, and initiate utilization of results.

    Responsible for achievement of standards required by the licensing agency are documented for each student, faculty (including adjunct faculty), and preceptors.
  • Lead the maintenance and development of the department, including regular assessment activities (DON Master Assessment Plan), program reviews, and accreditation activities, when applicable.
  • Point of contact for HLC related issues (eg work with Kris Church on website)

Work With Students

  • Play a lead role in ensuring students are properly orientated to the program, the college, the business of being a student, and support services we have at the college.
  • Collaborate with administrative offices to support student and faculty processes - transfer equivalencies, registration, course offerings, course overrides, academic advisement processes, student processes, etc.
  • Coordinate efforts within the department concerning current and prospective students, such as monitoring enrollments, advising potential majors and/or concentrators, and checking degree audits.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify appropriate department internships/capstones
  • Address student-to-faculty dispute concerns and resolutions if outside of program level
  • Teaching expectations within the program (varies with the program)

Work with Faculty

  • Welcome and onboard new faculty members, provide mentorship specific to the department.
  • Mentor faculty through the promotion and tenure process,
  • Review all faculty Self Assessment and Goals due in October
  • Complete the Joint Faculty Supervisor Evaluation and share with faculty each spring
  • Recruit and recommend the appointment of faculty members for the department, giving proper attention in their selection to demonstrated or potential teaching abilities.
  • Collaborate with program and track directors to identify and offer professional development opportunities for faculty teaching in the department and encourage scholarly and artistic work as a necessary source of enrichment for good teaching.
  • Model and promote scholarship, leadership, and professional development among both tenured and untenured faculty.
  • Address unsatisfactory faculty performance and, when necessary, initiate a performance improvement plan in accordance with institutional procedures.
  • Maintain a personal scholarly agenda, with the understanding the extent of expected activity will vary based on the extent of administrative duties.
