The UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking a Health Care Services Associate Director, Chief of Perfusion, to oversee and direct operational aspects of the Perfusion Service as well as the Perfusion Technology Education Program. Duties include managing daily clinical operations, staffing, financial planning, budgeting, performance improvement and compliance while serving as the lead clinical and technical resource. Key Areas of Responsibility include Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction; Patient Care/Services Delivery; Planning and Goal Management; Communication/Collaboration; Education Programs; Financial and Data Management and Analysis; Human Resource Management; Clinical Service/Unit Operations Management; and Decision Making and Critical Thinking.

Duties to Include:

  • Identify needs, trends, and forecasts in order to provide quality patient care within Perfusion Services. Implement appropriate clinical/operational changes as needed to ensure both quality and safe delivery of patient care.
  • Develop quality standards. Allocate appropriate resources to meet quality and productivity expectation. Develop, implement, and monitor plan to enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Update policies procedures as necessary/required.
  • Ensure all regulatory policies, procedures, standards, etc. (i.e., UIHC, HVC, Joint Commission) are met.
  • Develop action plans that meet strategic goals (UI Health Care, HVC and programmatic/unit); provide ongoing and regular progress reports to HVC director/assistant director.
  • Be accountable for meeting defined operational goals/objectives.
  • Advocate for programmatic needs with health care leaders; collaborate with medical directors regarding service development, process improvements, and equipment budgets. Engage and partner with HVC leadership, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiovascular perfusionists, VAD coordinators, and the ECMO Coordinators/Specialists to identify and implement opportunities for operational enhancement(s).
  • Ensure staff compliances are applicable and complete.
  • Work with the Education Director to oversee the Perfusion Technology Education Program [in collaboration with appropriate Departmental and UI Carver College of Medicine leaders]. Work with the Education Director to determine ongoing operational needs as it relates to all educational aspects of the Perfusion Technology Education Program as well as Perfusion Services.
  • Serve as a technical and clinical resource. Work in collaboration with the Education Director to provide clinical education activities and agreements with other educational institutions.
  • Serve as a knowledge resource to manage effective and smooth operations within Cardiovascular Pump Services by utilizing various management principles and techniques.
  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff within the Cardiovascular Pump Services. Responsible for continuous staff development, annual performance appraisals, developing/maintaining appropriate clinical staffing models/levels, and oversee time management system (ELMS) in collaboration with the HVC Human Resources Manager.
  • Develop annual budgets for Perfusion Services (operations and capital); provide projections and recommendations. Manage financial data and monitor budget to meet goals. Resolve budget discrepancies. Determine new/improved revenue streams and/or cost-savings strategies to resulting in programmatic growth.
  • Understand the issues related to the decision-making process as it relates to Perfusion Services; ability to analyze situations fully and accurately and reach productive decisions.
  • Continually refresh knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare and clinical practices for Perfusion Services. Ensure all regulatory policies, protocols, guidelines and/or practices for are followed and/or met.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:

• Master's Degree in Perfusion/Cardiovascular Sciences, Health Care Administration or Business Administration preferred.

• Bachelor's Degree in Perfusion/Cardiovascular Sciences, Health Care Administration or Business Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

• Successful completion of an accredited Perfusion Technology Program required.

Experience Requirements:

• 5 years progressive experience as a clinical perfusionist with exposure/experience to Cardiopulmonary Bypass, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumping, Autologous Blood Processing, Electronic Physiological Monitoring, and a variety of Ventricular Assist Devices. Exposure/experience must also include Pediatric perfusion, ECMO and cardiopulmonary bypass.

• 3 years supervisory experience.

• Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of financial planning and budgeting.

• Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to successfully manage a highly skilled team while serving as a change agent focused on delivering highly quality patient care.

• Excellent organization skills including the ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities while routinely and positively interacting/engaging with all members of a multi-disciplinary team through verbal and written communication.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications:

• 7 years progressive experience as a clinical perfusionist, including a wide variety of ventricular assist devices and other various extracorporeal life support devices.

• Experience working in an academic health care environment desired.

• Knowledge of EPIC desired.
