The Department of Pathology is seeking a Clinical Trial & Data Management Research Associate to serve as the primary point of contact and coordinate the use of the Department of Pathology's clinical laboratory services by University of Iowa researchers. This includes tasks such as protocol review and interpretation, arranging for and performing customized specimen processing, test requisitioning, result reporting, service billing and maintaining a departmental database outlining these projects. This position is 100% time, Monday-Friday, 0800-1630.

Duties to include:

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for University of Iowa researchers intending to utilize the Department of Pathology's clinical laboratory services as part of their research project.
  • Utilizes knowledge of the clinical laboratory sciences as well as the organizational structure and operations of the Department of Pathology's clinical laboratories to advise UI researchers and/or departmental staff and to answer questions or coordinate services.
  • Presents Pathology's application and approval process for utilizing clinical pathology services during the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences' Academy of Research Professionals and Clinical Lecture Series.
  • Fields calls and emails from researchers regarding the use of services or products provided by the Department of Pathology's clinical labs.
  • Reviews research protocols and/or investigator's manuals.
  • Coordinates the necessary arrangements for providing customized specimen processing, specimen storage, or other extraordinary or customized specimen handling or processing services for researchers.
  • Maintains a database (and corresponding files of documentation) that outlines the research requests and contains any background information that might be needed for future reference.
  • Serves as the Department of Pathology's representative on the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center's Trial Resource Evaluation Committee (TREC). Attends TREC meetings to assess trial feasibility and relay logistical issues associated with required study activities and enrollment related to Pathology.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in basic science with specialized training in medical technology or a clinical laboratory specialty or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • 1 year of clinical or research laboratory experience is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, Adobe Acrobat in particular.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Work experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician is desired.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations pursuant to medical records and clinical research is desired.
  • Some knowledge of University policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Previous experience in a pathology laboratory is desired.
