Position Overview:

The Control Systems Engineer provides technical support to ensure reliable operations of control systems at Motiva's Chemicals & Distribution facility in Port Arthur. This role ensures that control systems performance meets customer and Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) requirements and that systems design meets corporate and industry guidelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor control systems performance trends and develop plans to improve equipment reliability in production area.
  • Act as Control Systems (CS) focal point, providing or coordinating technical assurance of control systems for assigned area of responsibility.
  • Support maintenance and inspectors in analyzing complex problems escalated by the maintenance work process.
  • Provide guidance on control systems maintenance effectiveness to help continuously improve correct scope definition and quality of execution.
  • Ensure full compliance with HSSE and Technical Standards / Procedures for changes to automation and control designs.
  • Review Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) classification / design to ensure compliance with corporate and Process Safety Management (PSM) standards.
  • Review performance of control systems designed to mitigate risks identified from risk management studies (Process Hazards Analysis, PHA).
  • Participate in and lead CS incident investigations to evaluate root causes and propose design or work process improvements.
  • Develop opportunity proposals and concept designs for additions or modifications to control systems.
  • Develop and/or review operating procedures for plant control systems equipment as required.
  • Ensure control systems comply with applicable corporate, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Participate in Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) analysis and help to establish alarms and limits for equipment through Ensure Safe Production work process.

Experience and Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years of related controls and instrumentation work experience
  • Skilled in base layer control and instrumentation (HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Distributed Control Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Safety Instrumented Systems
  • Skilled in control algorithm implementation for Honeywell LCN & Experion PKS DCS platforms, PLC applications and miscellaneous control hardware
  • Knowledge of Triconex Safety Systems
  • Knowledge of Bentley-Nevada machine monitoring systems
  • Knowledge of Advanced Control Algorithms (DMC, Advanced Level Control, etc.)
  • Knowledge of refining and/or chemical processes
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral), organizational and planning skills (able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously)

Physical Requirements:
  • Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (respirator, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, heeled boots, and hearing protection)
