Job Summary / Basic Function:

Job Summary:Within the division of Student Services, the Coordinator of Special Population's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting special populations students to help them reach their educational goals by working closely with them to select courses, identify strengths, choose a major, act as a resource until the student graduates, and assist the division to accomplish institutional goals and objectives. This position will provide support and offer services to Special Populations students, which include disabled, single parent or parents of children under the age of 18, displaced homemakers, and economically disadvantage students. The Special Populations Coordinator will also coordinate efforts with an academic department and career services to provide assistance with retaining students until graduation, transfer, and job placement. This is an exempt level position. Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with Institutional Research to identify, track, and evaluate special population student's enrollment, retention, and completion data.
  • Review, asses, and recommend resources and marketing materials of resources for single parent or parents with children under the age of 18, displaced homemakers, and economically disadvantaged students.
  • Advise students individually and/or with groups regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedure, and campus resources.
  • Review, assess, and recommend academic accommodation for students with disabilities.
  • Utilize Starfish with caseload management and retention.
  • Identify root causes of attrition among special population students and create and communicate recommendations to the Manager of Academic Advising and Retention.
  • Assist special population students by referring them to campus and community resources.
  • Coordinate with proctor, tests for students with accommodation needs.
  • Assist students with identification of long-term goals and career plans.
  • Meet with students on a regular basis to track their academic progress and success.
  • Assist with registration, orientation, student seminars and other outreach opportunities.
  • Provide assistance to students, parents and community agencies with accurate and up-to-date information, which will assist in making sound educational decisions.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention activities.
  • Offer exceptional customer service in a student-centered, professional environment at all times.
  • Perform related duties as required or deemed necessary to meet the Special Populations and Academic Advising goals within the scope of responsibility.
  • Stay current on State, Federal, System, and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Upholds and agrees to comply with all federal, state, and local requirements pertaining to the security, confidentiality, and privacy of information maintained by the institution, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Evenings and weekends may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:This position requires the ability to: remain in a stationary position for most of the time; occasionally move about inside an office to access documents, office equipment, etc.; constantly operate a computer or other office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine.Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university
  • One year of work experience in a related field in either the private sector, with a state agency, or higher education and experience with special populations.
Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's degree from a regionally accredited university with a focus in Education, Leadership, or Counseling
  • Two years or more of work experience in special populations
  • Above average skills in the utilization of computer systems, Banner, Argos, and Microsoft Office applications
Salary:

$40,000
