Responsibilities

The Director of Library Services at Johnson C. Smith University oversees all aspects of the Library including administrative operations, public services, personnel, facilities, collections, budgets, and assessment.

The Director will ensure that the library fulfills its mission and its contribution to the University's overall mission by providing students, faculty, staff, and community members with access to digital and physical materials for academic research, collaborative study, and lifelong learning. The Director will provide leadership in the development of library programs and services reflecting emerging trends and best practices for academic libraries as components of the evolving educational and informational infrastructure, and will ensure that the James B. Duke Memorial Library supports the campus community, the Division of Academic Affairs, and the Golden Blueprint strategic plan for university success and development.

The Director of Library Services will provide and promote a vision for a 21st century HBCU library that includes maintaining a modern and comfortable environment that integrates emerging technology, collaborative learning, creative study spaces, and a holistic understanding of the Library as a powerful center for learning and innovation. The Director will develop a clear and realistic strategic plan for the Library in alignment with the strategic plan for the university; maintain and enforce clear and comprehensive library policies and procedures; and ensure that the James B. Duke Memorial Library provides efficient, professional library services, including reference, circulation and interlibrary loan services, to students, faculty, staff and community.

To achieve this vision, the Director will develop and manage a balanced annual budget for the Library that allows for the effective delivery of resources and services, and will actively pursue private and public grant funding to advance the goals and mission of the Library.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association-accredited program or equivalent degree
  • Five to seven years of academic librarianship and management skills in planning, finance, team building, grant management, supervision, and faculty and staff development
  • Progressively responsible professional managerial experience, including significant supervisory experience, in an academic environment
  • Experience leading library employees
    • Experience managing library budgets
    • Experience writing and managing grant projects from private and public sources
  • Experience developing and directing library initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with internal and external constituents
  • Demonstrated ability to provide oversight of and direct library operations, including long-term planning, implementing initiatives, and personnel administration
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage new/emerging technologies to develop a vision and new strategies to support changes in higher education and the role and function of a library on a university campus
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; demonstrated ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse workforce
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Handle confidential information with absolute discretion
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends, as necessary
  • Preferred Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:
  • Experience as Director or as head of a unit of an academic library
  • Experience leading efforts to integrate or implement relevant technologies that support teaching, learning, and scholarship
  • Robust commitment to information literacy, and a strong understanding of new and developing trends in higher education
  • Advanced courses in leadership and management
  • Teaching and reference experience at the college level
