Doris Stone Post Doctoral Fellowship

Location:
MARI Dinwiddie Hall
Open Date:
Nov 4, 2024
Description:

The Doris Z. Stone Post-Doctoral Fellowship aims to foster the professional development of emerging scholars, enrich the dynamic research environment of the Middle American Research Institute (MARI), and promote intellectual exchange within the Institute's academic community. We are committed to supporting early-career scholars from diverse backgrounds-particularly those from historically or geographically under-represented or Indigenous groups-who are conducting innovative anthropological research in Mesoamerica or Central America, regions where Doris Z. Stone made significant contributions.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on incorporating GIS and remote sensing technologies into settlement pattern analysis, landscape archaeology, or community-based research. Candidates with expertise in applying these tools to Mesoamerican or Central American contexts, particularly in areas such as settlement patterns, household archaeology, or community engagement, are strongly encouraged to apply. Proficiency in GIS-based spatial data analysis and remote sensing technologies is highly desirable.

Additionally, we welcome candidates whose research aligns with MARI's broader mission to:

1. Investigate the Indigenous history, lanuages, and cultures of Mesoamerica and Central America.

2. Steward its archaeological and ethnological collections.

3. Develop educational programs and events to inform the public about the region's Indigenous heritage. A strong fieldwork component is also encouraged.

Fellows are expected to fully engage in the intellectual life of MARI and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies, offering an advanced interdisciplinary seminar during one semester each year, presenting their research at least once every two semesters, and advising undergraduate, Master's, and doctoral students.

Qualifications:

The Middle American Research Institute and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies invite applications for a one-year post-doctoral fellowship (renewable for a second year) for the 2025-2026 academic year. Fellows will be appointed within the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and housed at MARI. Selection will be based on intellectual merit, the potential impact of the applicant's research and teaching, and alignment with MARI's strategic goals. The ideal candidate's research should complement areas of strength within Tulane's faculty associated with the Institute. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication, and an ability to collaborate effectively across multiple projects.

This is a full-time, residential fellowship with a salary of $50,000.00 plus benefits, renewable for a second year based on performance and available funding. Travel and moving expenses are not covered. Applicants must have either 1) received their Ph.D. no earlier than May 2020 and not currently hold a tenure-track position, or 2) expect to complete their Ph.D. by May 2025. Preference will be given to candidates who have not recently accessed Tulane University's resources and whose research would benefit from doing so.

Application Instructions:

Applications must be submitted via Interfolio   http://apply.interfolio.com/157707  and must include (1) a curriculum vitae; (2) a cover letter describing research interests, teaching and administrative experience, and your particular capacity to contribute to the Center's interdisciplinary mission; (3) a graduate transcript; (4) two recommendation letters; (5) a writing sample; (6) a detailed proposal for teaching at least one content course or seminar; and (7) teaching evaluations if available.
