The Anesthesia Technician is a trained member of the anesthesia care team with extensive knowledge of all anesthesia equipment and supplies. Under direct supervision, the Anesthesia Technician is responsible for assisting the Anesthesiologist or the Nurse Anesthetist in all phases of patient care in the operating room.
1. Assists with care provision (under direction of Anesthesiologist or CRNA)
o Under the direction of the anesthesia provider, assist with moving, lifting, and positioning patients
§ Assist with endotracheal intubation by preparing and holding equipment
o Under the direction of the anesthesia provider, maintain competency to place leads for cardiac monitor, blood pressure cuff, and oximeter
o Demonstrate knowledge of positioning devices used by anesthesia staff during surgical cases
o Demonstrate knowledge of surgical asepsis and traffic control while working within the OR suite, wearing PPE as appropriate
o Under direction of anesthesia provider, maintain competency to set up anesthesia machine for surgical procedures
o Maintain working knowledge of set up and break down processes for anesthesia specific equipment (including but not limited to anesthesia machine, Bis monitor, Sonosite, etc)
o Prior to start of surgical day, and in between cases as needed, inventory oxygen tanks in all operating rooms, ensuring a full tank in the OR at the start of each day
• 2. Performs decontamination, cleaning, and restocking
o Perform anesthesia specific, between case, turnover activities according to defined standards and policies
o Demonstrate use of Trophon high level disinfectant
o Restock anesthesia carts according to established supply par levels
o Demonstrate knowledge of perioperative environmental sanitation
o Maintains a neat, safe, and clean anesthesia environment in the OR suite
o Disinfect used equipment following manufacturer's instructions for use and hospital policy prior to returning it to storage
• 3. Assists in maintaining Anesthesia equipment
o Partner with clinical engineering and Surgical Services Leadership to address repair or replacement needs for anesthesia equipment
o Assist in visually inspecting equipment and reporting equipment concerns to the anesthesia provider
o Assist in anticipating the need for patient specific anesthesia equipment and bringing to anesthesia provider when needed
• 4. Orders, maintains, inventories, tracks, and manages supplies
o Identify inventory discrepancies, perform cycle counts as needed, and research and take appropriate steps to resolve identified issues
o Facilitate disposal of expired or recalled product under direction of anesthesia and OR leadership
o Partner with OR leadership and appropriate anesthesia staff to maintain appropriate stock levels for all anesthesia supplies
o Demonstrate ability to effectively and accurately purchase use hospital purchasing system to order anesthesia supplies
o Prioritize POs as needed, working with MGB Customer Service, to ensure delivery of items to ensure delivery of items for uninterrupted services
• 5. Interfaces with vendors
o Communicate with sales/vendor representatives as needed regarding new or existing supplies and equipment
o Maintain professional relationships with vendors
o Ensure operating room compliance with Joint Commission requirements
• 6. Utilizes organizational skills to assure smooth functioning of department operations
o Assist with special procedures, special projects, and other duties/tasks as assigned
o Under direction of anesthesia leadership, assist with orientation of new OR staff to anesthesia turnover processes and anesthesia supplies
o Prioritize delegated tasks based on patient care needs and unit activities
o Request assistance with delegated tasks when needed
o Complete work/tasks within allotted time frame, reporting unfinished responsibilities to appropriate staff
Qualifications
• Experience Minimum Required
o Experience working as an anesthesia tech, MA, EMT, or comparable role within the last 12 months
• Experience Preferred/Desired
o 2-4 years experience working as an anesthesia tech, MA, EMT, or comparable role
• Education Minimum Required
o High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience

o Academic work in biological sciences
