The Environmental Engineering and Consulting team delivers solutions for complex environmental challenges using our regulatory expertise and implementing practical and cost-effective compliance management processes and programs. We address our clients' biggest concerns around permitting, ecoservices, assessment, and remediation.

Our highly trained and experienced engineers and scientists, environmental and remediation specialists, geologists, hydrogeologists, biologists, and environmental compliance specialists work with both public- and private-sector clients, delivering turnkey solutions.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Our Environmental Health & Safety Technician position is located in, Quantico, VA.

As a key member of the Environmental team, this role will be responsible for a full range of activities including:

  • Supporting initiatives to improve the control of hazardous materials (HM) by operating and maintaining the Hazardous Material / Hazardous Waste Enterprise Application Software (i.e., Hazardous Material Management System [HMMS])
  • Maintaining accurate and current data in HMMS, including maintaining Authorized Use Lists and current HM inventories. This also includes receiving and issuing inventory in HMMS and creating HM barcodes.
  • Creating and updating Standard Operating Procedures regarding HM reporting
  • Conducting periodic audits at work centers to ensure that HM inventory is in compliance and conformance with applicable regulations and orders
  • Conducting material research in HMMS, SDS research, follow-up with work centers after conducting the audit, AUL and Usage reports, etc.
  • Developing and conducting HMMS user training as needed. Training may include shelf-life management procedures (to minimize expired shelf-life waste streams), HMMS inventory and issue functions, how to access SDSs, monthly usage reports, HM received forms, AUL approval requests
  • Preparing a Monthly Personnel Binder summarizing performed tasks, SDS research, site visits (audits), and other relevant program updates
  • Communicating with environmental program managers to facilitate extraction and validation of data from the HMMS application to develop periodic environmental reports (e.g., Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act [EPCRA], Biennial EPA Generation and Management reporting, etc.)
  • A general understanding of evaluating the current and proposed codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines to determine the impact on client current and future programs and activities
  • Interpret data and observations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry guidelines and advises management/clientele accordingly
  • Interface with customers to provide project status reports and ensure customer needs are met.
  • Maintain HMMS solutions for complex client regulatory programs
  • Maintains project-related equipment in a state of readiness
  • Troubleshoot computer hardware and software issues
  • Communicate project issues relating to corporate policy and procedures to the appropriate staff Service Line Manager/Project Manager
  • Build positive client relations through effective communication and project coordination by working effectively with MES and the client in both independent and team settings
YOUR EXPERTISE AND SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to perform each duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • High School Diploma or Associate Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Studies (required)
  • B.S. Degree or higher in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Studies (preferred)
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in environmental area of expertise
  • Ability to write technical documents including but not limited to reports, business correspondence, and SOPs
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and clients
  • Demonstrated proficiency with applicable equipment (i.e., computer devices) and software systems (e.g., Excel, HMMS, Filemaker)
  • Experience with HMMS is preferred
  • Employee must be able to successfully pass client background check requirements applicable to the client's site
  • Licensing and Certification: Not applicable
  • Requirements: Full-time assignment on-site at Department of Defense installation. This position requires the ability to successfully pass an FBI background check
Physical Demands

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee may be required to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers and is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. He/she frequently is required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel. There may be occasional lifting (overhead, waist level) from floor of supplies and materials weighing no more than 30 pounds. The work may involve some bending, standing, or walking. Out of office site visits could potentially have more strenuous physicals demands.

  • Possible work environments could include normal office working conditions in a well-lit, climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential and controlled out of office (industrial or outdoor) sites with potential exposure to noise and environmental conditions
