Housing Research Analyst

The Housing Initiative at Penn (HIP) seeks applications for a Research Analyst (or Senior Research Analyst, depending on experience) to conduct empirical research related to housing insecurity, economic precarity, and public assistance. HIP is dedicated to achieving more effective, equitable housing policy at the local, state, and national levels. HIP advances policy through rigorous research, civic partnerships, and honest and inclusive planning processes. 

HIP is engaged in a variety of projects, including 1) working directly with local partners to evaluate novel housing programs targeted towards populations with low incomes; 2) studying existing programs and policies aimed at addressing issues of housing stability, eviction, and affordability; and 3) developing comprehensive housing plans in partnership with local government, nonprofit partners, and community members. 

As Research Analyst, you will engage with the above projects by participating in the design of research methods and approaches; providing database management and graphical and statistical analysis of large-scale datasets; conducting and analyzing surveys, interviews, and focus groups; reviewing relevant data and literature; contributing to reports, working papers, journal articles, and other communications; and working collaboratively as part of a tight-knit team. The Research Analyst will work in several project teams and will report directly to the Director of HIP.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Works with HIP staff and project partners to conduct primarily quantitative research (70%)
  • Contributes to report writing, data visualizations, and other communications summarizing research findings (20%)
  • Provide project support, including scheduling meetings, organizing interviews and focus groups, and carrying out other duties and tasks to ensure project success (10%)

Qualifications:
  • An interest in studying affordable housing policy and racial and socioeconomic inequality
  • Proficiency in data management and statistical analysis using R, Stata, or similar tools
  • Proficiency in data visualization; geospatial analytical skills preferred
  • Ability to communicate results of analyses in a clear and effective manner
  • Experience working with large municipal, federal, and/or commercial datasets
  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience working, or education, in urban policy and/or data analytics
