Job Description

We are looking for a Network Development Instrumentation Specialist (NDIS) to join our team! The NDIS develops and validates new methods and procedures for environmental contaminants using LC-MSMS, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, and other instrumental techniques as appropriate. The NDIS improves existing laboratory approaches for environmental contaminants measurement to increase throughput, decrease costs, improve performance or other metrics. This position will implement methods and procedures at SGS labs across North America on site providing routine support on and off site as needed. The NDIS acts as an internal (and depending on aptitude/experience) external subject matter expert on the measurement methods, providing on and off-site support/guidance to local operations teams and management, and sales/sales support on a need basis. The NDIS works with the Product Director and team on concept and design of new products/services and improvement to existing services.

Please note that this position will require the candidate to travel about 35-50% to various lab locations throughout the network.

Job Functions:

  • Finalizes and implements plans for development and validation of new methods, and/or improvement of existing methods in consultation with the product director/team.
  • Performs method development on, and run LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS or other instruments as applicable, either at home base or at any other SGS lab.
  • Interacts with local lab operations/management on successful on-site implementation, training and offsite support.
  • Develops the sample preparation techniques, or test received instructions as part of development before this position can train an analyst to do it routinely.
  • Writes documentation including standard operating procedures, development and validation reports, method summaries and other documentation.
  • Provides routine updates on projects and tasks.
  • Conducts routine reviews of existing methods/services in conjunction with the Product Director.
  • Adheres to safety related management of change processes including all associated required OI documentation.
  • Records accurate and complete history of the work.
  • Maintains a clean lab environment to preserve the integrity of samples.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree with 3+ years experience in a laboratory setting. Bachelors degree with 6+ years experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated aptitude/skill at method development and improvement.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
  • Experience with sample preparation techniques such as column chromatography and solid phase extraction.
  • Familiarity with laboratory skills including pipetting, solvent handling, extraction and cleanup techniques.
  • Ability to connect technical work to larger context of client/market problems to be solved.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, ability to provide presentations and training.
  • Advanced mathematical and reasoning skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams/SharePoint and instrument control software.
