Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Radiation Safety Specialist serves as a health physicist in the radiation safety program and assists in the implementation and management of specific programs within the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s radiation safety program.  This position will work collaboratively with researchers, faculty, and staff to manage and implement the university’s radiation safety programs.  The position will manage radioactive waste, perform inspections of radiation use areas on campus and x-ray generating equipment. The position will calibrate radiation detection equipment.  This position will provide operational support for routine operations which include package receipts, radiation surveys, occupational dose monitoring tasks, or other tasks to support the compliance program activities.  This position also shares occasional 24-hour EH&S one call technical/emergency support coverage as assigned.     



Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Required Education and Experience

·         Bachelor’s degree.

·         Minimum of 5 years work experience in safety or safety program implementation, laboratory safety, or safety and health evaluations and audits.  

·         A master’s degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, safety or related area could substitute 2 years of work experience.

Minimum Required Skills and Abilities

·         Must have a valid driver’s license.

·         Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status

·         Must have health physics experience and knowledge on how to safely handle and work with ionizing radiation sources.

·         Must have ability to perform physical aspects of the job including lifting, carrying, and stooping and physical strength to move steel drums.

·         Must be able to wear personal protective equipment.

·         Must have strong verbal and written communication skills to obtain information, explain procedures and situations, and persuade others to address compliance related deficiencies or regulatory requirements.  

·         Ability to work independently and follow through on work assignments with minimal direction or as a team member to reach desired outcome.

·         Must have the knowledge, skills, and ability to independently execute job tasks that require the individual's judgment and appropriate decision-making skill related to the safe use, storage, transport, and disposal of radioactive material in both routine and non-routine situations. 

·         Knowledge of, or ability to learn applicable regulations, guidance documents, and institutional policies and apply these standards to provide guidance on research safety taking into consideration factors such as regulatory scope, hazards, and best management practices. 

 

 

Preferred Skills, Abilities, and Experiences

Preferred work experience in health physics or with ionizing radiation sources. Preferred work experience at university or in research.  Preferred knowledge or experience with x-ray generating devices, radioactive or hazardous waste management, and performing radiological surveys.  Preferred experience in assessing hazards or workplace safety. Preferred skills in business or technical writing.
