Growth in the US West Transportation Market is a critical component of GHD's overall strategy in the Americas. The US West Region is looking to bring onboard a motivated Senior Transportation Project Manager / Technical Lead - Highways, Roads, Bridges (HRB) to partner with our Market and Business Group Leaders to advance the expansion of GHD's Highways, Roads, Bridges practice throughout the Central Coast of California and beyond. This is a key position for the region with growth potential to a leadership role at GHD in the West, if desired, for the right candidate.

Our practice has matured and established itself with agencies across California and the US West. We are seeking a proactive Transportation PM and leader with the skills to help take our practice to the next level in the delivery of highways, roads, and roundabouts. Additionally, and often related to these key offerings, GHD has established recognition as a leading firm in active transportation across California, delivering regional trails, complete streets, first/last mile connections and other enriching and vital improvements.

Through a broad network of clients, GHD has exposure to these transportation projects through Federal, State, Regional, County, and Municipal agencies and private sectors. We are keenly aware of Caltrans' importance throughout transportation in the State of California and are seeking an individual with a strong grasp of Caltrans policy, standards, and protocol, as it relates to the delivery of transportation projects in each sector and funded through grants and other sources on and off the state highway system.

This position includes active participation in US West technical and project delivery forums and an opportunity to support the vision for growth within the US West Region and the company. This position will be based out of our San Luis Obispo, California office, but will be networked through our offices across the West Region with a focus on our offices in California.

Specific responsibilities in this role will include:

Strategy and Business Planning

  • Support technical execution, planning, and budgeting for the HRB practice.
  • Contribute to the management and leadership of the active delivery of projects in the West from initial concept studies through construction documents.
  • Support the development of annual tactical plans aligned with the overall strategic plan for the region.
  • With the help of others, increase GHD's transportation expertise and capacity in the West.
  • Support expansion of best practices for design and professional services delivery in the West and in concert with best practices currently in use within the Americas and beyond.
Winning Work
  • Client relations: through strong technical expertise and project delivery, support the initiation and development of effective relationships with key clients within the Central Coast of California (focus) and beyond (as applies).
  • Assist, contribute, and perform a lead PM role for the Highway, Roads, and Bridges (HRB) Business Group to position for opportunities with Caltrans and local County & Cities agencies.
  • Collaborate with the Regional Transportation Market Leads and Business Group Leads in the West Region to strategically position for project or program opportunities.
  • Participate in visibility activities including conferences and professional organizations as appropriate.
  • Support and lead the development of scope of work packages, budgets, and proposals
Project Delivery:
  • Leading best practice project delivery, making key technical contributions to projects and coordinating the work of team members to deliver creative solutions
  • Embracing established project management best practices and advocate for the adoption of standard methodologies within your sphere of influence at GHD
  • Directing the project teams, administering contractual aspects of the project, and having a client facing role when applicable.
  • Working with project directors, project managers, project teams, and Business Group Leaders (BGLs) in other BG's to improve job delivery skills within the Business Group
  • Support the development of pricing, scoping and winning strategies for amendments and follow-on work related to transportation projects.
  • Ensure adherence to GHD's QA/QC plans including meeting established Quality KPIs
People:
  • Supervising and managing technical staff
  • Purpose-led communications with other Business Groups to inspire the team and enhance the Employee Experience (EX)
  • Develop and mentor staff within the Business Group and Engineering Design Organization (EDO)Collaborating with and mentoring our Young Professionals to provide experience and exposure to a wide variety of projects, skills, and business practices
  • Accountable for implementing quarterly check-ins in the Business Group including conducting the check-ins for direct reports and your supervisor.
  • Collaborate with Market Leaders, Service Line Leaders and Project Managers within and outside the Region on work sharing and business development
  • Embrace the "One GHD" philosophy by collaborating with teams worldwide to share capabilities and project opportunities
Skills, Experience and Qualification:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in California
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with proven ability to develop, mentor and lead professional technical staff, and have positive interactions with peers, clients, and leaders in the business
  • Proficiency in Caltrans procedures, standards and protocol as related to on- and off-system project delivery
  • Experience with business development, capture planning, and marketing skills, as well as detailed proposal development
  • Exceptional track record with project execution for transportation projects
  • A real passion for developing people within GHD
  • Flexible and able to meet challenging deadlines, prioritize completing demands, and communicate solutions for these challenges to teams and leaders.
