Position: Supervisor - Histology
Position Summary: Supervises the day-to-day operations of the Histology Department
Principle Responsibilities:
Typical
- Ensures the accuracy and efficiency of services provided by the department
- Ensures compliance with ALL local, federal, CLIA, CAP, safety and OSHA guidelines
- Maintains a positive and professional work environment
- Performs department payroll functions
- Tracks employee attendance and reports deviations to supervisor
- Ensures personnel maintain a clean and well-organized work area
- Meet all required deadlines assigned by supervisor
- Maintain department supply stock levels and order supplies
- Provides technical instruction, training and guidance to technicians and lab aides in techniques, instrumentation and organization of work
- Adheres to laboratory and surgery center quality control policies, and ensures documentation of all quality control activities
- Differentiates acceptable and unacceptable processing, embedding, cutting and staining of tissue specimens
- Ensures proper handling of all tissue samples/protocols
- Identifies problems that may affect test performance or reporting of test results and resolves or immediately reports histology supervisor
- Calculates daily tech workload and updates supervisor on AP workload TAT
- Performs Histology bench work as needed to ensure timely completion of work
- Gives input on employee performance for annual evaluations
- Assist supervisor with special projects, as assigned
- Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to clients and patients

- Participates in continuing education programs provided by CPL
Scope: Promotes quality client/patient relations and creates supportive climate by serving as a role model for behavior. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations. Works with minimal direction; consults with technologists and general supervisor as needed. Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and laboratory clients. Operates general laboratory equipment, including by not limited to: telephones, computer keyboards and CRT, and microscopes. Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone, and computer methods
Education: Required - High school graduate or equivalent. Graduation from a school of histotechnology accredited by CAHEA/NAACLS or two years experience and certification requirements.
Preferred - H.T. (ASCP) or eligible.
Experience: Minimum - Two years acceptable supervisory/laboratory experience
Preferred - Three years of histology supervisory/laboratory experience
Skills: Ability to foster professionalism, growth and teamwork. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory clients. Ability to adapt to a changing work environment by organizing and prioritizing time and resources in order to produce the most effective work performance. Ability to assess work tasks, recognize limitations and request assistance when appropriate.
Physical Requirements: Requires light to medium lifting
Environmental Demands: Works in temperature controlled environment. May encounter hazards common to a pathological laboratory and come into contact with contagious pathogens and various laboratory chemicals. May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation. May be required to work with time constraints and in crisis situations.
