The Operating Room (OR) Surgical Aide is a trained member of the Operating Room team. The OR Surgical Aide works under the direct supervision of the OR surgical team to aide in efficient workflows for timely care of the surgical patients during the intra-operative phase of care.
- 1. Assists with care provision (under direction of the Surgical Team)
o Under the direction of the Surgical Team, assist with moving, lifting, and positioning patients
o Demonstrate knowledge of positioning and positioning devices used by Surgical Team during surgical cases
o Demonstrate knowledge of surgical asepsis and traffic control while working within the OR suite, wearing PPE as appropriate
o Maintain working knowledge of set up and break down processes for Operating Room specific equipment (including but not limited to positioning aids, mobile suctions, surgical tables)
o Prior to start of surgical day, and in between cases as needed, inventory basic carts in all operating rooms, ensuring a par level is met for the OR.
2. Assists in maintaining OR equipment and orderliness of equipment storage. o Demonstrates a basic knowledge of the use of OR equipment
o Assists in keeping equipment storage areas neat and organized, according to defined layout for easy equipment retrieval and to minimize equipment damage.
o Assists in anticipating the need for equipment and bringing to OR staff when needed for case.
o Assists in returning equipment to storage room after use, keeping hallways clear of unneeded equipment.
o Disinfects used equipment before returning it to storage
o Assists in visually inspecting equipment and reporting equipment needing service to leadership and/or clinical engineering
o Returns OR beds in storage to neutral position with standard accessories accounted for
o Assists in disinfecting and organizing lead aprons on rack after use.
o Assists in organizing fracture table accessories on the accessory cart.
o Assists in inventorying 02 tanks in each OR and ensuring a full tank in each OR at the start of the day.
3. Ensures the Timely Transport of Surgical Specimens and blood to the Pathology/Lab o Delivers specimens to the Pathology lab according to defined schedule
o Documents specimen delivery and receipt on the specimen log
o Delivers blood draws to the Lab promptly for required intraoperative lab draws
4. Utilizes organizational skills to assure smooth functioning of department operations. o Runs errands as required, assisting with special procedures, and other tasks as indicated
o Keeps scrub sinks stocked with hand scrub solutions, scrub brushes and masks, and keeps the scrub areas neat and clean
o Assists with the orientation to Surgical Aide duties of new or transferred employees
o Prioritizes delegated tasks based on patient care needs and unit activities
o Requests assistance with delegated tasks when needed or unsure
o Completes work/assignments within allotted time, reporting unfinished responsibilities
o Assists pick room staff with stocking of generic room stock as needed.
o Checks inventory levels of fluid and blanket warmers daily.
o Arrange for transport of inpatient beds for patients who will stay overnight or for observation.
Qualifications - Experience Minimum Required
o Experience working in the Operating Room in an ancillary position, MA, EMT, or comparable role within the last 12 months
