Technical Superintendents shall:

  • Comply with AML's Integrated Management System (IMS) and all relevant rules and regulations;
  • Ensure all duties are in accordance with quality, health, safety, security, environmental and ethics policies as applicable;
  • Propose a continuous personal performance improvement plan to be periodically reviewed;
  • Keep Fleet Director advised of actual or potential issues on assigned vessels. Work to resolve issues, including those related to speed, consumption, and operational performance;
  • Primary point of contact for assigned vessels for operational, technical support, personnel, and safety matters;
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Safety Management System (SMS) requirements for reporting incidents;
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and Classification Society reporting requirements;
  • Assist vessel in compliance with company policies, procedures, and performance standards;
  • Assist Masters with maintaining all vessel certificates and documentation as per USCG, Classification Society and international requirements;

1. Vessel maintenance follow up:

  • Monitor vessel performance (LO and HFO quality and consumptions), shipboard maintenance and repair programs;
  • Monitor planned maintenance system (PMS) software to identify potential issues which could impact the operation of the vessel;
  • Make recommendations for maintenance standards in the planned maintenance system based on the manufacturer's recommendations;
  • Supports the Technical Department with implementation and utilization of the PMS;
  • Utilize key performance indicators (KPI) to assess the efficiency of the PMS and take proactive and corrective actions to ensure the vessel is performing required maintenance in a timely manner;
  • Plan, organize, and arrange vessel maintenance during ship's trade;
  • Minimize interference with vessel commercial availability;
  • Supervise the shipboard working organization in close cooperation with Masters and Chief Engineers;
  • Monitor and manage ship's spares and stores availability along with requests from the fleet;
  • Conduct regular vessel attendances and inspections;
  • Submit damage claims, including stevedore damage, in cooperation with Legal department;
  • Follow up with defect reports and guarantee claims in a timely manner;
  • Review vessel monthly reports and ensure assigned vessels address deficiencies;
  • Review and assist vessel in addressing deficiencies. Identify root cause(s) and ensure proper corrective action(s) (CA) and preventative action(s) (PA) are executed within documented timeframe;
  • Implement actions related to relevant experience feedbacks on managed vessels.
2. Preparation of vessel dry dock:
  • Prepare dry-docking specifications;
  • Evaluate tender documents;
  • Prepare documents relating to the docking (DAI, EDD);
  • Support the dry dock manager during the dry-dock;
  • Attend dry dockings;

3. Vessel budget:

  • Manages the safe and economic operation of assigned vessels according to the applicable SMS;
  • Prepare vessel budgets for review and approval;
  • Review and approve purchase orders, invoices up to limit of authorization;
  • Monitor operating costs of assigned vessels to ensure expenses are kept within budget;
  • Manages shipboard budgets as approved annually by Senior Management.

4. Crew related duties:

  • Monitor crew overtime (OT), penalty time (PT), etc. in respect to company policies and regulations;
  • Monitor work/rest hour compliance and implement corrective and preventative actions (CAPA) as required;
  • Evaluate senior officers as per IMS and provide completed appraisals to Crewing for proper filing;
  • Provide input to Human Resource Committee for selection and assignment of senior officers;
  • Immediately inform Labor Relations of any personnel issues.

5. Certificates, inspections, and surveys:

  • Responsible for managing all aspects of assigned vessel operations including but not limited to scheduling surveys and inspections with relevant regulatory bodies/ classification societies and monitoring of vessels PMS;
  • Plan and arrange safety inspections, statutory and classification surveys to maintain the validity of certificates (except ISM, ISPS, MLC certificates) as applicable;
  • Ensure notification(s) are made to applicable classification society and/or flag administration (USCG) as required for any reported casualties or deficiencies on assigned vessels.
  • Track status of Non-Conformities (N/C), deficiencies, Corrective Action Reports (CARs), CG-835s, CG-2692s, Survey Status, Conditions of Class (CoC), Port State Control (PSC) deficiencies and ensure proper correction and/or extension by due dates;
  • Assist vessels with root cause analysis (RCA) and both Corrective Action (CA) and Preventative Action (PA) (CAPA), as requested;
  • Assist with incident or near-miss investigations as requested;
  • Mentor junior superintendents as assigned;
  • Available as operational member of Incident Response Team for any vessel incident, drill or exercise;
  • Perform such other tasks, duties and responsibilities as may be required or directed by Fleet Director.
