Who are we looking for?

GHD has a great opportunity for a Water Treatment Plant Operator to work in Phoenix or Tucson, AZ.

As a Water Treatment Plant Operator, you will support a diversity of projects in challenging and unique settings. You will work diligently as an integral member of the GHD team to deliver meaningful information to our clients. You will intermittently interface directly with clients, oversee and direct contractors, be largely responsible for your own work, and become a trusted point of contact for our clients and GHD Project Managers. Duties will evolve with experience and no day will be just like the last. The role of a groundwater treatment plant operator entails operating and maintaining the equipment and facilities that treat contaminated groundwater for reinjection, irrigation, or industrial purposes. A groundwater treatment plant operator performs various tasks as listed in the sections below.

Responsibilities:

  • Operations and maintenance (O&M) at three active groundwater remediation pump and treatment plants two located in Phoenix, Arizona and one located in Tucson, Arizona.
  • Includes internal and external inspections, monitoring of SCADA systems, mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, alarm response, and implementation and oversight of annual maintenance activities.
  • Monitoring and adjusting the flow, pressure, and chemical levels of groundwater entering and exiting the plant.
  • Collecting and testing water samples for quality, safety, and compliance with regulations.
  • Operating and maintaining pumps, valves, filters, disinfection systems, and other equipment.
  • Troubleshooting and oversight of remedial equipment including granular activated carbon (GAC) vessels, piping and valve assemblies, groundwater extraction wells, and SCADA systems.
  • Recording and reporting data on plant operations, maintenance, and incidents.
  • Identifying and troubleshooting problems and performing repairs or preventive maintenance as necessary.
  • Ensuring the safety and security of the plant and adhering to environmental and health standards.
  • Coordinating with other operators, supervisors, and external agencies as required.
  • Ensuring timely delivery of all assigned tasks and providing clear and accurate documentation and effective document management.
  • Supporting groundwater gauging and monitoring, environmental compliance documentation, contractor oversight, environmental data collection, report/specifications production, and general regulatory standard interpretations.
Experience and Skills:
  • Minimum Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 1 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification
  • Knowledge of groundwater treatment processes, equipment, and regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic skills and aptitude
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and repair water treatment equipment and systems.
  • Ability to monitor and test water quality and adjust as necessary.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, procedures, and safety rules.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and external agencies.
  • Ability to use computers and software to record and report data.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions, and to lift and carry heavy objects
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work for discrete periods of time, ability to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds, and ability to work outdoors part-time throughout the year as needed
  • Experience with general construction and field safety protocols and equipment
  • Ability to analyze field readings, data and operating parameters to optimize system operations
Qualifications:
  • Minimum degree is a High School Diploma and a state certification or license in water treatment and distribution. A plus, would be candidate with some postsecondary education or training in water treatment, chemistry, biology, or related fields.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience, five years specifically in remediation and O&M.
  • ADEQ Grade 2 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
  • Hazardous Waste Manifest/DOT Certification
  • Familiarity with Rockwell Automation Products SCADA software
  • Experience with operation of soil vapor extraction (SVE) treatment systems
