BASIC FUNCTION

To participate in the design, control, and execution of laboratory research projects; coordinate the processing and analysis of data; and coordinate and implement revised research methodologies as required.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Research:

  • Search out and perform critical analysis of literature relevant to current research projects.
  • Write and deliver progress reports on research topics at department conferences.
Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations:
  • Coordinate the conduct of experimental tests and plan the processing and analysis of research data obtained.
  • Conduct surgical preparation of research animals for experimental protocols.
  • Perform experiments using in-vitro vascular ring techniques.
  • Involved in using molecular biology techniques such as PCR and gene transfer.
Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications:
  • Assist in preparing research papers and manuscripts for publication, presentations at conferences and workshops, and writing project reports, articles, and other documents.
  • Organize research data and analysis.
  • Translate and interpret data following computer-assisted processing to perform statistical tests such as regression curves and paired and unpaired t tests such as analysis of variance.
  • Use computer-assisted programs such as Delta-graph, Sigma-plot, and Cricket-graph to obtain a visual representation of research data collected in the lab.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of complex data processing systems to code research data and prepare comprehensive reports on systems studies.
Administrative and Project Management:
  • Participate in the formulation and development of general goals for the research project and the experimental protocols.
  • Conduct or participate in staff conferences related to the project's progress.
  • Present regular progress reports to the project director and other staff as required.
  • Assists in the preparation of grant proposals for new funding.
Facilities and Equipment Management:
  • Maintain, conduct, and document laboratory equipment inventories according to university policy and under the direction of the designated Department administrator.
  • Serve as a consultant to the senior investigator in technical design, repair of equipment, and co-managing one of several labs.
  • Assume responsibilities for the application and teaching of a wide variety of biomedical instrumentation to research fellows, visiting scientists, and others. This includes cleaning, preventive maintenance, and routine servicing.
Supervision/Staffing:
  • Plan and coordinate the work of support personnel.
  • Follow general policies and procedures in accordance with the regulations of The University of Iowa College of Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision and direction is received but considerable independence is expected.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional and administrative supervision will be exercised over assigned research personnel.

EDUCATION REQUIRED

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

5 years experience with the following:

  • Procurement and preservation of heart valve tissue from mice
  • Preparation of mouse heart valve tissue for histologic and immunohistochemical analysis
  • Preparation of mouse heart valve tissue for real-time PCR and RNAseq
  • Mouse genotyping
  • Tabulation and preparation of results for peer review publication and grant application
